The Importance of Eating Clean

Eating clean is a philosophy of health that says what you eat is the most important component in determining your weight, metabolism, and disease factors. There are some good benefits of eating clean, including the potential for weight loss, but we always have to remember to temper these kinds of claims with a good, healthy dose of reality.

What Is Eating Clean?

Eating clean is basically a philosophy of eating a healthy combination of minimally processed foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, fatty fish, and lean meat. Your primary beverage should be water to help your body absorb and utilize the nutrients and flush out toxins contained in the food, produced by the body, or stored from previous bad dietary habits.

The goal is to eat six smaller meals a day, including breakfast every day. Every meal should contain lean protein and complex carbohydrates, with healthy fat at every other meal. Over the course of the day you should drink about 13 cups of water.

Benefits of Clean Eating

There are two categories of clean eating benefits: claimed benefits and proven benefits. There are a lot of proven benefits to some of the principles behind clean eating. For example, it’s better to eat more good carbs than bad carbs, and getting lean protein is better than eating too much fatty meat. The benefits of improved heart health, cancer reduction, and improved energy come from a diet that generally follows the principles of clean eating.

However, if you believe that clean eating is going to have more of an impact on your figure than your level of exercise, or if you think that calories don’t matter as long as they’re clean, or if you think that your genes won’t have any impact on your results, you’re likely going to be disappointed.

Clean eating is a good, general set of principles for eating well. It’s not a hard-and-fast rule, and if you become too obsessed with it, you might do more harm to yourself than good in the long run.
