Losing Weight Like Playing Golf

Even though you may not be a golf fanatic like me, there’s an old golf saying, “Drive for Show, Putt for Dough”.  When a golfer steps up to the tee box, they usually try to whack the ball as hard as they can to try to impress all the spectators, but the real winners are the ones that win all the money when they putt the ball in the hole.  In other words, it doesn’t matter how far you can drive the ball, it’s how you chip and putt is what makes you a great golfer.

In the game of weight loss, you will see lots of those who “drive for show”.  You know them.  They are always on the latest fad diet – the cleanse, the 21 day weight loss plan, the juice diet, etc.  Sometimes they even lose a good amount of weight in the beginning, but if you wait just long enough, you’ll notice all the weight comes back, and they are back to their old habits.

I teach the short game, and in the end, I will make you win (or lose) it all.

#1  Eye on the green.

One of the biggest mistakes that most people make when it comes to losing weight is that they don’t even know where the “green” is or where their goal is.  It is always all talk.  “I should lose weight.  I don’t look good in my clothes.  I’m feeling heavy.  Maybe one day I should start watching what I eat.”

Well if you don’t set goals, you won’t make a plan on how to get there.  So keep an eye on the green.  Set a number and set a date, so that you know how far you are to the goal, and how to adjust your swing as you get closer to the green.

#2 Know how to handle the rough.

The reason why patients who are able to lose and maintain their weight is because they know how to handle the rough.  (In the game of golf, the rough is consider the areas of the golf course where the grass is thicker and much harder to hit out of.)  The point is that they understand that they don’t have to be “perfect”.  Our successful “losers” know how to get back into the fairway when there’s a holiday or vacation, or birthday or anniversary, or some other event that throws them off course.  Readjust and get back on track to the green.

#3 Prepare for the hole.

Once you get to the green, it isn’t just simply putting the ball and it rolls into the hole just like that.  Each green has hills, bumps, and slopes that purposely make it hard for you to hit it into the hole.  So you have to plan ahead.  When it comes to weight loss, it is important to plan your meals and create a strategy in place before you start every day because you already know there are going to be hills, bumps, and slopes that will keep from reaching your goal.  When you have a plan in place,  you will set yourself up for success!
